The Siege of Jadotville
The Siege of Jadotville (2016) is a war film based on true events from the 1961 siege of Irish UN peacekeeping troops in the Congo. The film, directed by Richie Smyth and starring Jamie Dornan as Commandant Pat Quinlan, depicts the heroic but overlooked stand of 155 Irish soldiers against a force of 3,000 mercenaries and Katangese rebels.
Sent to Jadotville as part of a UN peacekeeping mission, the Irish unit found itself unexpectedly surrounded and outnumbered by heavily armed enemies. With limited supplies and no reinforcements, Quinlan led a masterful defense, inflicting heavy losses on the attackers while suffering no fatalities among his men. However, due to political failures and lack of support, the unit was eventually forced to surrender after five days of relentless fighting.
The film highlights themes of bravery, loyalty, and political betrayal, showcasing how the soldiers’ valor was initially dismissed by their government. Only decades later was their sacrifice officially recognized. With intense battle sequences and a gripping narrative, The Siege of Jadotville brings to light a forgotten chapter of military history, honoring the courage of the Irish troops who fought against overwhelming odds.
